Do Credit Repair Companies Guarantee Results? What the Law Says
By Alex Serratos, Founder of Clean Path Credit
The short answer: no — and that's required by law
The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA, 15 U.S.C. §1679b) makes it illegal for a credit repair company to guarantee the removal of any item from your report or a specific increase in your score. So if a company is guaranteeing results, it's either breaking federal law or quietly redefining what "guarantee" means. A company that tells you "no guarantees" up front is following the law — not dodging the question.
Why no one can honestly promise an outcome
Credit repair works by disputing items that appear inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA §611 and §623). The bureaus then investigate, and the original creditor decides whether to verify the item. Those decisions belong to the bureaus and creditors — not to any repair company. Because the company doesn't control the outcome, it can't honestly promise one.
What a company CAN honestly commit to
Plenty — just not outcomes. An honest operator can commit to the process: a thorough three-bureau audit, properly drafted disputes filed under the correct FCRA sections, written updates each round, and your full rights under CROA (a written contract, no advance fees, and a 3-day cancellation window). Those are deliverable and verifiable. A guaranteed score is not.
Money-back guarantee vs. outcome guarantee
These get blurred on purpose. A satisfaction or money-back guarantee is a refund policy — legal, and fine to offer. An outcome guarantee — "we'll raise your score 100 points" or "we'll remove that collection" — is what CROA forbids. When a company advertises a "guarantee," read closely to see which one it actually is.
How to use this when you're shopping
Treat a results guarantee as a red flag, not a selling point. Pair it with the other CROA basics — no upfront fees, a written contract, a 3-day right to cancel, and (in Texas) a registered credit services organization with a surety bond.
